Adult Neuropsychological Assessment
What can I expect during the evaluation?
On the morning of your evaluation, the doctor will interview you, and possibly, your family members, regarding your history and your goals for the evaluation. This interview typically lasts 30-60 minutes. Following the interview, you will be shown to the examination room to begin testing. Family members and friends will not be permitted in the examination room while you are testing as this could impact your performance. A variety of tests will be given to you. For example, you may be asked to complete paper and pencil tests, answer questions, or perform tasks on a computer. Often a trained technician will administer some or all of these tests. Some tests will be easy while others may be more complex. Most people find the tests and the evaluation process interesting. Typically you will work for a couple of hours in the morning and then complete testing after a lunch break. If you become too fatigued to continue, testing might be completed on a second day. After your evaluation, the doctor will score your tests and compare your performance to other individuals your age. This information will be compiled in a detailed report, which you can then share with other health professionals, school personnel, etc. A feedback appointment will be scheduled approximately one week after your evaluation. At that time, the doctor will review your test results with you and you will be provided with recommendations and/or referrals for additional treatment if needed.
What can the test results tell me?
• Testing can help determine whether memory changes are related to normal-aging or if they reflect a neurological disorder.
• Testing may be used to identify problems related to medical conditions such as diabetes or alcoholism.
• Testing can be used to establish a baseline and document changes in functioning over time.
• Test results can help physicians and therapists with treatment planning.
