​What can I expect during the evaluation?


Prior to the evaluation, you will meet separately with the doctor to review your child’s history, your current concerns, and your goals for the evaluation. This interview lasts approximately one hour and may be conducted on the day of testing or on a separate day. You will be given questionnaires to complete and, if you are concerned about your child’s performance in school, you may be given teacher questionnaires as well. On the day of testing, your child should eat a nutritious breakfast and take his or her usual medications unless you are instructed otherwise. After an interview and brief explanation of the evaluation process, your child will be shown to the examination room to begin testing. Family members are rarely permitted in the examination room during testing as this could impact your child’s performance. A variety of tests will be given to your child. For example, he or she may be asked to complete paper and pencil tests, answer questions, or perform tasks on a computer. A trained technician may administer some of these tests. Some tests will be easy while others may be more complex. Most children find the tests and the evaluation process interesting. Depending upon the age of the child, he or she might work for a couple of hours in the morning and then complete testing after a lunch break. Alternatively, testing might be completed over multiple days. After the evaluation, the doctor will score your child’s tests and compare his or her performance to other children of the same age. This information will be compiled into a detailed report, which you can then share with other health professionals, school personnel, etc. A feedback appointment will be scheduled approximately one week after your child’s evaluation. At that time the doctor will review the test results with you and you will be provided with recommendations and/or referrals for additional treatment.​

How do I prepare my child for the evaluation?

  • Try to explain the evaluation to your child using language he or she can understand. Brief, simple explanations are best. You might want to tell them that the purpose of this evaluation is to help him or her do better in school. It may be helpful to give an example of a problem your child is aware of such as “trouble with reading.”

  • You might also want to reassure your child that the testing doesn’t involve any “shots.”

  • Prior to the evaluation, make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and eats breakfast (preferably low sugar).

  • Give your child the medications he or she normally takes, including medications for ADHD (unless instructed otherwise by our staff).

  • Bring your child’s glasses.

  • Bring any records of previous testing.

  • You might wish to bring a morning snack for your child to eat during breaks from testing. In some cases we will also send you and your child on a lunch break, so please bring a lunch or plan to have lunch at a nearby restaurant. Ridge Ferry Park is right across the street and is a nice place for a picnic and for your child to expel some energy during the lunch break.

  • Although most children enjoy the evaluation process, it can be tiring to some children. Please let your child know that you will be providing a special reward (such as a special meal, a movie rental, a small toy) for working hard during the evaluation.

  • Your child’s evaluation may last anywhere from two to six hours. You may wish to bring reading material to enjoy while you wait for your child. It is not permissible for you to leave during your child’s appointment.

​What can the test results tell me?

• Testing can help to confirm a diagnosis, such as dyslexia or attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).


• Testing can identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses and this information can guide teachers, therapists, and you to better help your child achieve his or her potential.


• Testing can provide a baseline of your child’s functioning and document changes in functioning over time due to interventions, development, or other factors.

What Can I Expect from the Results?

  • An understanding of your child's intellectual capabilities, learning style, and neurocognitive strengths and weaknesses

  • Diagnosis (if applicable)

  • Specific recommendations for you as well as your child's teachers, doctors, tutors, and therapists

  • A comprehensive written report that includes scores, interpretations, and recommendations that will allow for necessary accommodations in the schools
