Cognitive Rehabilitation
Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy (CRT) is intended to help people who have experienced a decline in their cognitive skills (due to a brain injury, dementia, post-concussion syndrome, etc.). The primary goal of CRT is to teach individuals strategies for compensating for their cognitive impairments. Some of these strategies are internal. For example, a patient may be taught to use mental imagery to improve memory for verbal information. Other strategies are external, such as learning to use an agenda or smart phone to keep track of appointments and important tasks. The therapy is usually conducted in weekly, hour-long sessions and patients are given daily homework assignments to help them practice and master the techniques taught in session. At the start of therapy, the patient and the therapist will work together to determine what areas to focus on in treatment. These goals may be modified during the course of treatment if necessary.
